when to see a doctor
By Mayo Clinic staff
As a general rule, losing more than 5% of your weight in 6 to 12 months can indicate a problem. If you're older and have other medical conditions and health issues, losing even a small amount of weight can be a big deal. See your healthcare provider if you're losing weight without trying and are concerned.
Your healthcare provider can work with you to determine the
cause of your weight loss. He'll likely start with a thorough discussion of
your symptoms, medications, general mental and physical health, and medical
conditions. Also, your provider will likely perform a physical exam. @smarttechpros

Your healthcare provider will also likely review any recent
cancer screenings you've had. This may include a colon cancer screening, breast
exam, mammogram, or prostate exam. This can help determine if further testing
is needed.
Your provider may also discuss changes in your diet or your
appetite and sense of taste and smell. These can affect your eating and weight
and may be related to certain medical conditions.
Your healthcare provider may order blood and urine tests
that can provide information about your general health. Other tests may be
performed based on these results. Imaging scans for hidden cancers are
generally not performed unless there is no other evidence besides weight loss
points in this direction.
Sometimes, if the primary evaluation does not identify a
cause, a watchful wait of one to six months is a reasonable next step. Your
healthcare provider may suggest that you discontinue any restrictive diet. You
may need a special diet to prevent further weight loss or to regain lost
weight. Your provider can refer you to a dietitian who can make suggestions on
how to get enough calories. @techgeeksblogger
